Hi. We’ve found the body of an inmate. It’s experienced at least a couple days’ decomposition, so we suspect he doesn’t have a Warden of his own to bring him back. Or notice he was missing. His name is Silver. Is he one of yours?

Were there any other casualties, that you know of? Archer alerted us that Florian had been murdered, much more recently. Iris and Sweeney are tracking the person responsible, who I suspect is also one of mine.

It doesn't take long, after he's invited; one of the first things Zerxus did upon arrival was memorise the ship's layout and all of the most efficient routes. Old habits die hard, and it's a useful one anyway.

There's a delicate quality to the knock; he's being careful not to disturb the artwork.

Rather than slithering up to the door with her long eel's tail, Ulla calls out, "Come in!"

She's at the bottom of a steep slope of gray sand, in the entrance to a grotto. The only water currently in the cabin fills a couple trenches to either side of the cave entrance, tidepools filled with mantis shrimp and starfish and strange, glittering crabs.

When he shuts the door behind him, he may notice that in contrast to the geometric patterns on the outside of the door, the inside features a wolf in the center, butterflies fluttering around its head and a pair of chimera fish circling in a pool at its feet.

What's the request? [Ulla has driven enough hard bargains over the years that she doesn't agree to anything without knowing what it is. But she doesn't sound at all worried about this one.]

She slithers to the door and greets him with a smile, beckoning him in. "Hello, Lark."

The water level in the cabin is at half tide at the moment, a steep slope of dark gray sand leading down to the water, half of the stone archway into the grotto where Ulla sleeps visible above the surface. Her mobility devices and a waterproof trunk rest on either side of the doorway. And when she closes the door behind him, contrary to the pretty but impersonal geometric mosaic on the outside of it, the inside features a wolf in the center with butterflies fluttering above it and a pool of water with two swimming chimera fish below.

And then there's the newest addition. A curved ramp leading up to a dry balcony for Ulla's harp and a conversation or reading nook, with two big comfy armchairs and a lamp.

Ulla opens the mosaic-covered door and smiles slightly. "I wondered if you'd come. I planned on looking, after Trevor talked to me."

She's in human form today, in a long green dress, but her feet are bare and she's standing on a little stretch of dark gray sand that slopes down toward a cavern, like an underwater grotto revealed at low tide. Tide pools to either side of the cave entrance house shrimp and starfish. Ulla considers and discards the idea of the ramp leading up to a balcony, where Ulla keeps a couple comfortable chairs, a lamp, her harp, and anything else she'd like to keep dry. She'll head for the grotto instead.

"Come sit down?"

The grotto has a nest of pillows and blankets in the middle and stone benches carved into the walls, all of which are covered with mosaics. Pearl and shell in the patterns of swirling ocean currents, arching branches of trees, the petals of an enormous flower.

Taylor's more than comfortable, wrapped around Ulla in her bed on the new ship, her arms around her waist and her chin hooked over her shoulder. The coma lasted no time for herself, no time to miss her lover, but she knows it wasn't easy for her.

"You know... we could go find somewhere private on the reef when we stop this afternoon."

Ulla smiles, shifting just enough to trail kisses and nips down the side of Taylor's neck, hooking her tail over the other woman's legs.

"I'd like that," she murmurs. "Having you underwater with me is so good. I want as much of it as I can get."

There were no hard feelings. I've been an inmate here. For two and a half years before I became a warden. I'm hardly about to hold a negative response to some part of it against you. [Especially a non-violent negative response.]

Would you like to come back and visit me and Hjerte? The water's low right now because I'm human-shaped again, but it doesn't take long to raise. Or the Enclosure's good for colder waters. I just might transform first for that.
