Ulla. Been a goodly bit but I was hopin' you might have a few minutes to chat about Collins. I've just been paired with him and I'd like to touch base, hear what you've implemented it and how it was taken. I feel like this one might like to wriggle a little and I'd rather get ahead of that if I can.
A door! Upgraded, I see. [Doors were deeply important to Raylan, the idea of not having one set his neckhairs to backflips. He'd mentioned it at the time and stood by the ultimately completely unimportant opinion.]
I'll be there in five minutes.
--
And so he was, prompt as always, rap rap rapping on her door.
[Ulla laughs.] I've been spending less time underwater since Taylor spends a lot of time here. It seemed worth finally making a door if the grotto is actually accessible. [Also, privacy with Taylor.]
--
And she'll answer the door in sildroher form, slithering on her eel tail. She offers him a towel and gestures down the gray sand beach toward the cavern she lives in. "Come down to the grotto, but it's still wet in there. You can sit on this."
He was happy for her and Taylor of course and it left a crooked smile on his face as she greets him. He steps in, taking the towel with a little nod and glancing the way she'd gestured before heading that way.
"Thanks. Fortunately, I got some practice in walkin' in sand in these boots. You know I ended up gettin' a little bit'a beach in my cabin, in part 'cause of you."
"Really?" she didn't know that, but always approves of more beach on this
ship.
The cavern she slithers down to is plain on the outside, but the whole
inside is covered in mosaics, images picked out in pearl and shimmering
shell and precious stones. A giant flower on one side fades into swirling
ocean currents, and then into the arched branches of trees. A couple
benches are cut into the walls, although Ulla herself will settle on the
floor since it's more comfortable in this form.
"What can I say, it leaves an impression," he huffs with a smile, folding the towel in half to drop it into one of the benches and sits down.
"So. What can you tell me about Collins? Arthur told me you'd worked some magic on him, making sure he can't attack folks who are under 21, if I understand correctly? I'd love to hear your thoughts on how things went down too; tryin' to confirm facts and make sure I understand what's goin' on with this guy."
"No, Arthur asked the Admiral for that. I asked the Admiral to
extend that protection to everyone. He's allowed to defend himself, but he
can't start an altercation or he and any weapon he wields will go
intangible. The spell I laid on him was... a punishment, not mitigating
the harm he could cause. He's asked me to remove it, but he asked with
threats and belittling the murders he committed, so I haven't."
Ulla opens her hands. "I'll tell you the same thing I told his last
warden. It's at your discretion. If you ask me, I'll remove the curse.
He's a musician, and I tampered with his pitch. He hates it. And I never
intended it to be permanent, but as of this moment, it stands."
He expression doesn't change as Ulla corrects him, but his head does tilt to the side as she clarifies her part of it and his eyes narrow a fraction when she gets to what it was and did. That's a heafty fine for a musician. He wasn't so far into his learning the fiddle to count himself as one, not one that had any real soul and identity sunk into it, but he could understand the depth of that cut.
"For now, let's keep it in place. I'll be reaching out to him as soon as we're done here, see what the landscape of the man is like and how we might go about it. No one with two brains wants to reward bad behavior, but you're right, it can't last forever. How long as he been under it so far?"
"It's been over a month. I'd be out of my mind by now, in his place.
...And if he weren't so new, if he'd had rapport with anyone ahead
of time, perhaps there would have been a better response. I can't blame
him for how much he hates it."
If he'd asked sincerely, she might have removed the curse already, with or
without his warden's say so.
"But telling me that he kills people for a living, that he's a predator and
there's no changing that, that if I remove it he'll behave himself,
and otherwise he'll do his level best to make everyone miserable? ...Not
the sort of arguments I wanted to cave to. You have a mess on your
hands, and I'm sorry if I've made it a bigger one."
"Nah, there's no need for you to apologize. Consequences are hard to swallow for those types of folks that haven't ever been made to have them before, and a smart man wouldn't go threatenin' folks if he wanted them back. Lyin' would have gotten him further. A month is a long time already - I'll take it into consideration. I don't expect to have any breakthroughs with him or anythin', I've never been overly successful with Temps, but it's a card to keep in my back pocket. At least for another couple of weeks."
He takes and lets a breath, nodding a little.
"Is there anythin' else about him I should know about? Anythin' I oughta be aware of around this whole mess?"
"I stayed practically on top of him for the next week, mostly for his own
protection, but I was distracted for a second and Johann threw knives to
take him out. Just before pairing announcements. If you want to take other
consequences of his actions into account too."
Ulla shakes her head. "He died instantly, or I could've healed him. I think
Johann knew that."
"I do. It's a whole picture, any person, and it matters, what he's already had to handle."
Johann's reactive protectiveness over his.. partner, (Raylan didn't know the exact situation, but he knew Florian and Johann were each other's people), made a revenge murder inevitable. Now that it was out of the way, there were a few different math equations to do, but those had to wait for first steps to be taken.
"That doesn't surprise me, about Johann. Right now, best we can hope is that he's satisfied and isn't anglin' for more bloodletting."
After pairings
Re: After pairings
Ah, good. I was about to call you.
Would you rather talk here or in person? You're welcome in my cabin, or I can come to you.

[Its impolite to ask ladies to travel if there isn't a pressing need.]
You free for it now?

Yes. The door with the mosaics on Level 5. I'll lower the water the rest of the way for you.
